"The ecology of ponds in the context of human activity and geography – environmental DNA and beyond"

We are delighted to invite you to attend the conference „WHAT WHISPERS IN THE POND?” presenting current results of the Ecopond project entitled "The ecology of ponds in the context of human activity and geography – environmental DNA and beyond".

Our event will be held on 20th of October 2022 from 9:00 am to 12 pm in the Institute of Nature Conservation of the Polish Academy of Sciences (Mickiewicza 33 Av. Kraków). Second part of the conference is planned as eco-workshops organized at Franciscan Square in Kraków (1:30 pm – 5 pm).

09:20 - 09:40     Dr hab. Karolina Bacela-Spychalska, prof. UŁ: Czy urbanizacja wpływa na bioróżnorodność stawów w kontekście gradientu geograficznego? (WP1) + discussion

09:40 - 10:20      Mgr Annette Taugbøl (NINA) and Dr David Strand (Norwegian Veterinary Institut): How to use environmental DNA to detect diseases in aquatic habitats + discussion

10:20 - 10:40      Coffee break 

10:40 - 11:00      Dr hab. Szymon Śniegula, Prof. IOP (IOP PAN): Wpływ czynników antropogenicznych na ważkę tężnicę wytworną (WP5) + discussion

11:00 - 11:20      Dr Guillaume Wos (IOP PAN): Impacts of climate change and biological invasion on a damselfly Ischnura elegans (WP5)  + discussion

ECO-WORKSHOPS [part 2]

Date: 20th of October 2022
Place: Franciscan Square, Franciszkańska 4 St, Kraków
Time frame: 1:30 pm – 5:00 pm

The main aim of this part is popularization of the project results by building ecological awareness and practical knowledge about organisms living in the ponds and their behavior. This part is organized outdoor and would be open for school groups and all Cracovians.

International teams from Poland and Norway will be presenting the subject of the conference with more practical approach including experiments, poster presentations, direct interactions. We will also open for you our eco-bus, which is a real attraction!

During the workshops you will:

🐸 increase your knowledge about pond’s inhabitants and their behavior (we will bring crayfish, dragonflies and other organisms that live in the ponds!)

🐸  conduct experiments using the scientific methods

🐸  visit and play in our eco-bus

🐸  take part in competitions, presentations and creative plays

Audience:

  • all interested in ecology, biodiversity, study of the environment
  • school groups
  • residents of Kraków
