ABSTRACT:
Ranid herpesvirus 3 (RaHV3) is a recently discovered virus associated with skin disease in frogs. We detected RaHV3 DNA in free-living tadpoles of the common frog (Rana temporaria), consistent with a pre-metamorphic infection. Our discovery reveals a critical aspect of RaHV3 pathogenesis, relevant to amphibian ecology and conservation, and potentially, to human health.
